Saramago y Melville- la mejor novela surge de la imaginación
Acabo de leer dos libros imprescindibles que me han dejado muy feliz: “El viaje del elefante” de Jose Saramago y “Barteby, el escribiente” de Herman Melville.
Como dice Saramago “la mejor novela surge de la imaginación y no de las vivencias”, su libro es un cuento largo en que cuenta la historia del traslado de Lisboa a Viena de un elefante regalado en el siglo XVI por el rey de Portugal al archiduque de Austria. Como dice Pilar su mujer: “pese a no ser un libro voluminoso, tendrá alrededor de 240 páginas, podremos reconocer en sus páginas la imaginación de Saramago, la compasión solidaria, ese sentimiento que, expresándose literariamente, es sobretodo humano. Este sentimiento atraviesa la obra, la distingue y la significa. Encontraremos también el humor que el escritor emplea para salvarse a así mismo y para que el lector pueda penetrar el laberinto de humanidades en conflicto sin tener que abjurar de su condición indagadora de humano y de lector. Como siempre, toparemos con la ironía, el sarcasmo, la belleza en estado puro, la responsabilidad de escribir, el arte de haber escrito”.
